Applying to Salve Regina as a Transfer Student

Each fall, approximately 10 percent of our new incoming students have transferred from another college or university. For some students, transferring has always been a part of their educational plan, while others are beginning a new college search for a variety of reasons. There are about as many reasons for transferring as there are transfer students. Whatever your circumstances are, we will do our best to make your transition as smooth as possible, and we will always treat you like an individual.

Requirements for Transfer Admission

An individual is considered a transfer student if they have enrolled in any college or university courses after graduating from high school or earning a GED. Salve Regina admits transfer students in both the spring and fall semesters. As a general rule, the more college coursework you take, the less we will rely on your high school record to make an admission decision. The average college GPA of transfer students offered admission to Salve Regina is a 3.0.

Applying as a Transfer Student

You must submit:

  • The Application for Transfer Admission with the $50 fee. Students may also use the online application or the Transfer Common Application.
  • Official high school transcripts and/or GED scores
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one must be from a college instructor)
  • Personal statement
  • Official college/university transcripts
  • Official SAT/ACT scores (SAT/ACT scores are not required if you have earned at least 30 college credits). Salve Regina's CEEB code is 3759. International students may submit TOEFL results in place of the SAT.
  • Dean of Students Certification Form from each college you attended
  • List of courses currently in progress if not listed on your official college transcript

After your application and all supporting documents are received, we will usually respond to you within four to six weeks. If you are currently enrolled in courses, we may ask for a mid-semester grade report before we make an admission decision. You may download the Mid-Semester Grade Report Form here.

Re-Applying for Admission

If you previously applied to Salve Regina within the past three years, you may reapply by submitting the Request for Reactivation of Application.

In addition to the Request for Reactivation of Application Form, you must submit all updated, official transcripts (high school and college/university) and a Dean of Students Certification Form from each college/university attended.

If you had applied for admission during your senior year of high school, official final high school transcripts and updated SAT/ACT scores (if applicable) must be sent. Official transcripts should be sent at the close of each semester.

Students who were not previously admitted to Salve Regina and who wish to reactivate their application must also submit one letter of recommendation from a recent college instructor.

After your application and all the supporting documents are received, we will usually respond to you within four to six weeks. If you are currently enrolled in courses, we may ask for a mid-semester grade report before we make an admission decision. You may download the Mid-Semester Grade Report Form here.

Credits

Transfer students who have been accepted to Salve Regina will receive an unofficial transfer credit evaluation within approximately three weeks of their admission decision. Transfer credit is typically awarded for academic courses completed at other regionally accredited institutions with a grade of “C” or above when the coursework is comparable to that of Salve Regina and does not duplicate another course for which credit has been granted. Your progress towards a degree can be gauged by how closely the course of study you have taken matches the degree requirements at Salve Regina. Enrollment, Orientation and Class Registration

To formalize your enrollment, you must send a $500 commitment fee/housing deposit ($300 for commuters) and the reservation agreement enclosed in your acceptance packet. Transfer students who have submitted an enrollment deposit will work with the Office of Academic Advising to develop a course schedule based on their intended major, transfer credits and program requirements. Click here for a schedule of classes and course catalog.

Detailed information regarding Orientation will be mailed to you after we receive your enrollment deposit. Transfer Orientation is held in late August/early September (typically the week before classes begin) for students entering in the fall semester and mid-January (typically the day before classes begin) for students entering in the spring semester. Orientation is a one-day program that is tailored to the specific needs of transfer students. At Orientation, you will meet with an academic adviser to finalize your course registration. Attendance is required for all students enrolling at Salve Regina for the first time.

Housing

On-campus housing for transfer students is available based on space availability. We offer a variety of housing styles from traditional residence halls to townhouse-style living. The city of Newport offers off-campus housing options, many within walking distance of the Salve Regina campus. Students should speak with local independent rental agencies if this is the housing option they prefer.

The availability of on-campus housing for transfer students varies from year to year. We will work closely with the Office of Residential Life to accommodate your request for on-campus housing. If it is not possible to grant your request, we will assist you with finding a local realtor. The rental market for student housing in Newport is large, so most students do not have much trouble finding a residence off-campus.

Financial Aid

Your eligibility for need-based financial aid is determined by federal Department of Education regulations and University policies governing financial aid programs. To apply for need-based financial aid, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) code 003411 and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile code 3759. The priority deadline for filing financial aid forms for each academic year is March 1. Transfer students who are seeking admission for the spring semester should file financial aid paperwork once they have submitted an application for admission. For more financial aid information or to access the required forms online, visit the Office of Financial Aid.

A Note on Entry to Academic Departments/Declaring a Major

Students should be aware that it is possible to meet the standards for transfer admission but not the requirements for a specific major. The nursing and education departments both have specific steps a student must take to gain entry to their programs and officially declare the major. We will do our best to counsel you as to whether your transfer plans are feasible. However, it is the student’s responsibility to investigate the requirements for the majors they intend to declare.

Mid-Year (Spring) Transfers

The time period for spring admission is very compressed. Therefore, it is recommended that you submit all of your information as early as possible. Spring admission is not recommended for students who have struggled academically in high school. Housing cannot always be guaranteed for students entering for the spring semester.

Priority Deadlines

  • Fall admission: March 1
  • Spring admission: Dec. 1
  • Filing forms for financial aid: March 1

Please note: Applications received after these priority dates will be reviewed on a space available basis.

Student athletes should obtain a release form from their athletic director before contacting Salve Regina coaches.
